My Approach

We use EFT like a surfboard, a resource helping people to ride the big waves of emotions and sensations in their body.

My approach to teaching EFT developed from years of experience working with thousands of people, including many humans who have experienced significant trauma.

In my niche of Sexual Trauma, I had to find a way to do EFT with people who were experiencing significant dysregulation. This taught me a lot about how I want to teach EFT to others.

I am here to dispel the myth that doing EFT is “easy”. It can be, but it’s not always easy.

This is why consistent practice, psycho-education, certification and mentoring in slow, safe and gentle EFT is so important to being ‘prepared and not scared’ in your practice.

This is especially important for mental health professionals working with complex clients who have known trauma histories and the associated mental and physical health problems. In this context, we can be afraid to use EFT with some clients, as we don’t know how they will respond to it and we know they’re already struggling so much.

We do not want to make anything worse for them. EFT can feel like “too much, too soon” for some individuals and can contribute to a feeling of being “out of control”. This can be triggering for the bodies of some people who have experienced trauma.

For lots of people with chronic problems, EFT is not a “quick fix”. It can certainly bring relief in a session but may take many sessions to really resolve an entrenched problem like PTSD or chronic pain.

What I know as a Social Worker and therapist who has been through the process of becoming an EFT practitioner, is that EFT is a very different way of working with emotions, compared to what most of us are taught as mental health professionals.

Working somatically with the body is not something most of us have been trained in, so there is a lot to take in and it can be overwhelming.

I know myself, that after my first few EFT trainings, I was very excited about EFT and totally committed to it as my main way of working. But I certainly did not remember or understand it all and I did not feel confident to do it with all my clients.

It seems completely normal to me that many people get overwhelmed in a regular 3-4 day EFT training.

They go home feeling motivated and inspired, but many only practice EFT with a select few people. And they are often not practicing much on themselves, either.

They tap with clients they find “easy” but are a bit afraid to try it with their more challenging and highly traumatised clients. They feel scared, as they know they may not yet be prepared if a client has an abreaction, or doesn’t cope with some aspect of the EFT process.

None of us want our clients to have negative associations or bad experiences with EFT. We also don’t want to look like we don’t know what we are doing when tapping with others.

The way I teach EFT addresses these very normal feelings.

I offer EFT trainings in a safe, supportive and digestible format of 4 hours per week, over 8 weeks. I pair each trainee with a swap partner so that everyone is undergoing weekly practice for the duration of the training.

During certification and mentoring, I provide personalised feedback on every session note you submit so that you can grow your confidence as a practitioner.

I teach you how to teach your own clients about EFT, trauma and the nervous system. Because this is how you build trust, safety and rapport.

When you train, certify, or mentor with me, you will learn valuable skills including:

Regulation — what it looks like and how to prioritise it

Psycho-education — how to educate your clients on EFT and their nervous system so that they understand what’s happening in their body

Understanding Capacity — for you and your client

Zooming-in and zooming-out — how, why and when to be gentle or get specific

Future Focused EFT— a trauma-informed goal setting framework, tapping on recent and future events vs. diving into the deep end to process trauma
